ABSTRACT

To analyze the prevalence and characteristics of late postoperative complications of orthopedic surgeries by video arthroscopy. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that evaluated, through its own instrument, local and systemic postoperative complications of patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries by video arthroscopy. The study included 270 patients, who were evaluated on days 30(without prosthesis) and 90(with prosthesis placement) of the postoperative period, by telephone service. The selection of participants occurred sequentially and population-based, within the data collection period, from February to July 2020, in a large hospital for medium and high complexity surgeries. Of the 270 procedures performed in the period, 4.4% (n = 12) presented late postoperative infection. The most frequent complications were erythema (83%), edema (75%) and secretion (67%) in the surgical wound. Most used antibiotic therapy (92%) and anti-inflammatory drugs (67%). Hospital readmission was not necessary concerning the complications. Only 50% required medical evaluation before the scheduled time. The need for practices that ensure the quality of perioperative care and improve the active search to assess surgical outcomes is reinforced.

ABSTRACT

This is an experience report intended to highlight the importance of the nursing students' participation in the Research Group - Educare - Passo Fundo University, RS, Brasil, and its contribution for the professional qualification. The article reveals the group contributions to the nursing students through its effective participation during the whole research process. It emphasizes this participation as an opportunity for the close relation of theoretical knowledge and the essential practice which is considered an important instrument for the development of creative power intended to search for solutions to solve the problems found in the reality.

ABSTRACT

The social determinants are in line of production hospitalizations due pneumonia in infants. Then, the objective of this study was to investigate the main factors associated with hospitalization due to pneumonia in infants aged less than six months old. A prospective cohort enrolled all liveborn infants from Passo Fundo, in 2003, hospitalized during the first six months of life with radiographic diagnosis of pneumonia. Infants with congenital malformations and heart disease were excluded. The infant and ambient factors were combined with information on hospitalization, obtained from the hospital records. Analysis was performed by descriptive statistics, odds ratio and multivariable logistic regression model. From the 2,285 infants investigated, 82 (3.6%) were hospitalized due to pneumonia in the study period. Socioeconomic status C/D/E was identified as a determinant of hospitalization due to pneumonia, with relative risk up to six times higher than the status A/B. The presence of three or more alive children and breastfeeding demonstrated to be protective. The hospitalization due to pneumonia was determined by the socioeconomic status, requiring actions of reduction of its iniquity.
